Lucca city centre

Piazza Napoleone is the reference point chosen to help you locate the historic centre, not an invitation to drive into it: check restricted traffic zones and parking first.

Trains, buses and parking

Check Trenitalia for stops, tickets and timetables. For buses, confirm routes, stops, operating days and the last return service with Autolinee Toscane.

If driving, choose a car park listed by Lucca’s tourism service and follow local rules. A route suggested by your navigation app does not authorise entry into a restricted traffic zone (ZTL).

We do not publish unverified road distances or journey durations. Select your transport mode and date in Google Maps: kilometres and times are shown within the route and depend on travel conditions. 02 / A first introduction

What to see in Lucca

Mix time in the squares with a walk above the city and an indoor visit. Always check official listings for admission, reservations and opening times: a good plan leaves room for a break.

Views / On foot or by bike

The city walls

A 4.2 km circuit built in the 16th and 17th centuries, now an elevated park. You can enjoy just one stretch rather than walking the entire loop.

The route is shared by walkers and cyclists: take care around bikes, pedestrians and children.

Guinigi Tower

This 45-metre tower carries a garden of holm oaks above the rooftops. There are 230 steps to the top: consider your energy, mobility and the day’s conditions before climbing.

Squares / Time to pause

Piazza dell’Anfiteatro

The oval shape preserves the memory of the Roman amphitheatre. Step inside, pause in the centre and notice how the buildings frame a single, intimate space.

Art / A place of worship

San Martino Cathedral

Look at the asymmetrical façade and discover Jacopo della Quercia’s monument to Ilaria del Carretto. The cathedral is associated with the Volto Santo, or Holy Face, and the Luminara tradition.

San Michele in Foro

Include the church and its square in a walk through the historic streets. If you would like to go inside, check opening times and respect religious services: not every stop needs a lengthy visit.

San Frediano

03 / One possible itinerary

One day in Lucca, without rushing to see it all

A flexible suggestion to adapt to your arrival point, opening times and pace. This is not a route with guaranteed walking times.

  1. Morning · The walls

Arrive in the city and start with a stretch of the elevated promenade. Use a map to find an access point suited to your needs.

  2. Towards lunch · The squares

Head into the centre, passing San Frediano and Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Take a break before continuing towards San Michele.

  3. Afternoon · Art or a view

Choose San Martino for art or Guinigi Tower for a climb. Picking one rather than collecting admission tickets makes for a more relaxed visit.

  4. One last stop · Heading back

End with another stretch of the walls or a pause in a square. Before settling down, check your parking, train or bus arrangements for returning to Lammari.

With children or in hot weather, reduce the number of stops and plan water and rest breaks. In rain, replace the tower or the wall walk with an indoor visit after checking that it is open.

Four details that tell the city’s story

A garden instead of battlements

Guinigi Tower’s outline is recognisable by the holm oaks on its summit. The Guinigi family had it built in the 14th century: a medieval building whose suspended greenery is part of its story.

Antiquity beneath your feet

The Roman amphitheatre, dating from the 1st–2nd century, lies about three metres below today’s level. Its footprint survives in the oval square; Lorenzo Nottolini’s reshaping of the space began in 1830.

A façade that breaks symmetry

Do not look for a perfectly mirrored design at San Martino: its asymmetry is one of the details to notice. Inside, the story continues with Ilaria del Carretto and the Volto Santo, associated with the Luminara.

From defence to a promenade

The 16th- and 17th-century walls are now enjoyed as a park above the city. Their 4.2 km circuit offers a way to see Lucca from above without climbing a tower.

A day trip for every Tuscan mood

Choose one area per day and check routes, opening times, tickets and weather. These are ideas for independent visits, not excursions or transfers arranged by the apartment.

Capannori and the Lucca plain

Villas and gardens offer a way to discover the area, while the Compitese is worth exploring for its camellias. Check visiting seasons and access to each individual property.

Collodi

Combine the village with Pinocchio Park and the Garzoni Garden. For a family day out, check tickets, opening times and the conditions of the paths beforehand.

Pisa

Piazza dei Miracoli is the best-known stop, but leave time for the Lungarni riverside streets too. Plan any paid visits without assuming that tickets will be available on arrival.

Plan a visit to Pisa

Garfagnana and the Serchio Valley

Villages, nature and mountain landscapes offer a change of scenery. Check weather, trail conditions and equipment: a mountain outing needs different preparation from a city stroll.

Versilia

Choose between the coast at Viareggio, a visit to Pietrasanta and the landscape of Massaciuccoli. For water-based or outdoor activities, check operators, seasonality and weather conditions.

Small decisions for an easier day

Open the topic you need: practical information to tailor your plans, without making promises about apartment facilities or accessibility.

Visiting with children or a pushchair: where to start?

Choose fewer stops, breaks in the squares and part of the walls rather than the full circuit. Check gradients, surfaces and entrances using the official accessibility information. Keep children close on the walls and watch for bicycles; Guinigi Tower involves 230 steps.

What can we do if it rains?

Prioritise an indoor art visit, such as San Martino, subject to opening times and religious services. Suitable shoes and a shorter plan help; do not assume that the tower or exposed walks are suitable in every weather condition.

How can I plan a visit with mobility requirements?

Read Lucca’s accessibility information and ask each venue to confirm entrances, ramps, lifts and facilities. Towers involve stairs and historic routes may have changes in level. City guidance does not certify the apartment’s accessibility: contact the owner about specific requirements before planning your stay.

Driving, restricted traffic zones and parking: what should I check?

Check official parking guidance before entering the city. Look at signs, access gates, charges and temporary restrictions: following a navigation app is not permission to enter a ZTL (restricted traffic zone). Events can bring changes to traffic arrangements and access.

Events and Lucca Comics & Games: how should I prepare?

Check Lucca’s official events calendar for your dates, including cultural and music events. For Lucca Comics & Games, reconfirm tickets, access and organisers’ guidance; plan your return to Lammari and allow for crowds and traffic changes. Ask the owner about a stay rather than assuming availability.

What local flavours could I try during a break?

Look out for buccellato, a local sweet bread, tordelli lucchesi, a filled pasta, and traditional soups on menus and in food shops. Choose according to season and preference, and always ask the venue about ingredients and allergens: recipes and preparation can vary. These are suggestions for exploring local food, not meals or services included with the apartment.

Where can I get a map and confirm information?
